and Human Rights Seminar. The Ethical Globalization
Initiative (EGI) is a new project led by former President
of Ireland and United Nations High Commissioner for
Human Rights Mary Robinson. The EGI brings key stakeholders
together in new alliances to integrate concepts of
human rights, gender sensitivity and enhanced accountability
into efforts to address global challenges and governance
shortcomings.

A a framework for financial institutions and project
financing. The IFC convened a meeting of banks in
London in October 2002 to discuss environmental and
social issues in project finance. At that meeting,
the banks present decided to try to develop a banking
industry framework for addressing environmental and
social risks in project financing. This led to the
drafting of the Equator Principles.

The IMF is an organization of 184 countries, working
to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial
stability, facilitate international trade, promote
high employment and sustainable economic growth, and
reduce poverty.
International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) - www.iso.org
ISO is a network of the national standards institutes
of 146 countries, on the basis of one member per country,
with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland,
that coordinates the system. ISO is a non-governmental
organization: its members are not, as is the case
in the United Nations system, delegations of national
governments. Nevertheless, ISO occupies a special
position between the public and private sectors. This
is because, on the one hand, many of its member institutes
are part of the governmental structure of their countries,
or are mandated by their government. On the other
hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the
private sector, having been set up by national partnerships
of industry associations. Therefore, ISO is able to
act as a bridging organization in which a consensus
can be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements
of business and the broader needs of society, such
as the needs of stakeholder groups like consumers
and users.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the principal
document relating to human rights. It was adopted
by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December
1948 and now available in over 300 different languages
at www.unhchr.ch/udhr/index.htm.
We have not reproduced this document here for sake
of space, but it is the first place for anyone to
go to when seeking a general understanding of human
rights. Following the Universal Declaration there
have been a series of Conventions and Covenants relating
to Human Rights which can be reviewed at the same

In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San
Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International
Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter.
The Organization officially came into existence on
24 October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified
by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom,
the United States and a majority of other signatories.
United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 October. The
purposes of the United Nations, as set forth in the
Charter, are to maintain international peace and security;
to develop friendly relations among nations; to cooperate
in solving international economic, social, cultural
and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect
for human rights and fundamental freedoms; and to
be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations
in attaining these ends.

specialized agency for health. It was established
on 7 April 1948. WHO's objective, as set out in its

of disease or infirmity.
